A penumbral lunar eclipse of the full Flower Moon took place on May 5, 2023 and was visible for much of the Eastern Hemisphere and Antarctica. This type of lunar eclipse occurs when the moon enters the outermost part of Earth's shadow, known as the penumbra.

Why Is It Called the Flower Moon?

The full moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not solely to the full Moon.

The Flower Moon

May’s Flower Moon name should be no surprise; flowers spring forth across North America in abundance this month!

  • “Flower Moon” has been attributed to Algonquin peoples, as confirmed by Christina Ruddy of The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre in Pikwakanagan, Ontario.

  • May’s Moon was also referred to as the “Month of Flowers” by Jonathan Carver in his 1798 publication, Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America: 1766, 1767, 1768 (pp. 250-252), as a likely Dakota name. Carver stayed with the Naudowessie (Dakota) over a period of time; his expedition covered the Great Lakes region, including Wisconsin and Minnesota areas.

  • Henry David Thoreau sparked the Native American Moon names as well, referencing the Flower Moon and Carver when he wrote about Native Americans.

The Cree names Budding Moon and Leaf Budding Moon celebrate the awakening of local flora, which really begin to leaf out now in many areas. Similarly, Planting Moon (Dakota, Lakota) marks the time when seeds should be started for the farming season ahead.

The activities of animals marked spring’s arrival, too, which is highlighted by the Cree names Egg Laying Moon and Frog Moon, as well as the Oglala term Moon of the Shedding Ponies. All three names indicate that warmer weather is on the way!

Scorpio is the eighth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Scorpius. It spans 210°–240° ecliptic longitude. Its name is Latin for scorpion. It lies between Libra and Sagittarius to the east. Scorpio is one of the three water signs, the others being Cancer and Pisces. It is a large constellation located in the southern hemisphere near the center of the Milky Way.
The Western astrological sign Scorpio differs from the astronomical constellation. Astronomically, the sun is in Scorpius for just six days, from November 23 to November 28. Much of the difference is due to the constellation Ophiuchus, a large constellation straddling the celestial equator, which is used by few astrologers.
Under the tropical zodiac (most commonly used in Western astrology), the Sun transits this sign on average from October 23 to November 22. Under the sidereal zodiac (most commonly used in Hindu astrology), the Sun is in Scorpio from approximately November 16 to December 15.
Scorpio is associated with three different animals: the scorpion, the snake, and the eagle (or phoenix). The snake and eagle are related to the nearby constellations of Ophiuchus and Aquila.
Aquila is a constellation on the celestial equator. Its name is Latin for ‘eagle’ and it represents the bird that carried Zeus/Jupiter’s thunderbolts in Greco-Roman mythology. Its brightest star, Altair, is one vertex of the Summer Triangle asterism.
In ancient times, Scorpio was associated with the planet Mars. After Pluto was discovered in 1930, it became associated with Scorpio instead. Scorpio is also associated with the Greek deity Artemis, who is said to have created the constellation Scorpius.

Scorsese and De Niro reunite at Cannes for Killers of the Flower Moon

The director and actor talked about learning from the Native American nation at the heart of their latest film

Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro have reunited at the Cannes film festival to present a feature together for the first time in almost half a century, discussing their acclaimed new movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, on Sunday.

“We haven’t been here together since 76,” said De Niro, recalling the premiere of Taxi Driver, the second of their 10 collaborations, which won the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.

Both men spoke of the importance to them both of sensitively telling the story of a succession of murders that terrorised the Osage people in Oklahoma in the mid-1920s. These killings were motivated by a desire to ensure the new wealth created by oil found on the Osage reservation fell into the hands of white incomers.

Scorsese said he had been so deeply influenced by his encounters with the Native Americans that he switched the film’s focus and decided to tell the story of the crimes from the victims’ perspective.

The 80-year-old director, whose Catholicism has been a dominant theme in many of his films to date, attended a series of Osage council sessions in which he observed their prayers and rituals. “I was so affected and so moved,” he said. “I know what their values are and [that they are] really understanding how to live on this planet. It reoriented me every time they spoke.”

Joining Scorsese at the press conference was Chief Standing Bear, leader of the Osage Nation, who said that his people still suffer to this day. “But I can say on behalf of the Osage Nation that Scorsese and his team have restored trust,” he added.

Killers of the Flower Moon was rapturously received at its premiere on Saturday evening at Cannes, where it is showing out of competition. Scorsese’s 26th feature – and, at almost four hours, one of his longest – is adapted from David Grann’s nonfiction book of the same name.

Opposite Mucus sits Ophiuchus. The tower of Babylon must be destroyed in each one of us by us. Why must this happen? Because there's a parasitic mucus feeding off your direct feed. Causing an interruption in communication within to your source. A snake in the tree, a strand forming.

People often have no frame of reference for movement within the spine as I often speak of ..nor did I until it started moving one day and slowly but surely, never stopped moving to this day nor will the radium stop churning up and melting down the xylem and phloem canals within the spine for another 1560 years as radium's half life. A spinning ball of mercury sits at the top of the coiled copper....the fluid first slows down into a state of thick maple syrup before it eventually hardens and becomes crystalline as one of the 14 pieces of Osiris. They put the body back together in the story of Osiris, just because your at point a speaks nothing of your ability to be at it's opposite point if the choice is made. Matter can easily melt and be penetrated, it holds not the same threads of security that the untouchables build with....temples are built upon sand there, they don't shift. The only permanent constant is change. To have the ability to be in any state and to then be in a state is a choice. To be in a state and to not know about other states is enslavement as the mind is the builder, the heart is it's direction. When we haven't experienced something we don't know it. We can hear about, talk about it....but you can't know it yet until you dawn it. Once dawned you can speak of it with authority as you are now it and it is a piece of you. All things are this way, it's a giant sharing game. Beware of Jupiter's gifts it's said...wear....be ..... Jupiter is the one that got a weigh from Saturn or time...space ... Our time, our space. It's not all the time, and sometimes we can't find the time, but every single thing we sense and experience is truly Jupiter and we basque in those gifts. What you don't see is also a gift, a very big gift. Saturn ends the realm of seeing objects with the naked eye, unless your 20/10 ish you can spot Uranus and a few other cool beings.....3%...that's the spectrum of light we "see". 97% got away....consumed by time, it's all within if you didn't get that part there...97% of it. 3% is gas, that's it. Noble gases, know the bull. Lube backwards as well.... anagram for blue. When I look up at the blue sky I can thank creator for adding lube to the constant pounding we all take on a daily basis. Thanks Jupiter, thanks for the lube.
